Robbie may have been to Whitby's last show but Whitby was nearly the last show I went to. Paul Conway, Bill Hornsby and me were being taken to Whitby' s show by another, Senior judge. I was allowed to sit in the front and all went well for 10 minutes, until we reached the motorway. Senior Judge drove onto the motorway with hoots of disapproval from the other two judges. When I asked what was wrong they pointed out that Senior Judge had a provisional license and was not allowed on the motorway. Sitting in the front meant I was acting as instructor and could be held responsible for his actions. Back onto 'B' roads and things did not improve he was not the best of driver and did not care. To prove he could control the car he swerved severely, forgetting the car was laden with 3 burly judges, the inevitable tank slapper nearly taking us into a ditch. We were passing through a pretty little village with a small pottery works in one cottage. The front had an array of finely crafted work which I admired on the way past. When I paid attention to the road again, a high stone wall was in the way, I turned to Senior Judge who was also admiring the pottery. A word of encouragement from all in the car helped Senior Judge to avoid the wall with millimetres to spare. Paul Barrow |
