Once again the Pickering Centre of Askham Bryan College, North Yorkshire played host to our annual aquarium fish Open Show. It was lovely to see a large contingent of our
‘good friends’ from STAMPS make the journey to be with us. Miss Amy Charters, Mr. John Douthwaite, Mr. Bede Kerrigan and
Mr. Robbie Kirkup
brought along their best fish for the Open Show. Altogether a total of
227 entries were spread over the 45 Classes with 26 families bringing along a stunning array of high quality fish that included Rasbora wilpita, Devario sondii, C89, Angola Barb, Rivulus igneus, Albino Corydoras paleatus,
Botia histronica, LDA 41, Aequidens rivulatus, Corydoras aurofrenatus and C113.
Y.A.A.S. ‘A’ Class Judges, to whom we send our thanks, Mrs. P. Jones, Mr. A. Frisby, Mr. T. Douglas and Mr. S. Grant were kept very busy and awarded a large number of green cards, for 85 points and over, which went
home with many happy exhibitors. Our thanks also to Mr. Malcolm Short, Mrs. Shirley Nelson, Mr. Terry Nelson and
Sharon who combined to do a great job as Show Stewards.
The main results were as follows: -
Best in Show -
Mr. Roy Blackburn (Castleford Aquarist Society)
with a Akysis prashadi (87 points).
Best in Show runner-up -
Mr. B. Kerrigan (STAMPS)
with a Sewellia lineolata (86 points).
Best Goldfish - Mr. J. Haworth (member of the KPJ showing team, Select A.S.).
Best Exhibit - Mr. Roy Blackburn (Castleford A.S) with a pair of Akysis baramensis.
Junior Award - Miss A. Charters (STAMPS).
All of the STAMPS showing people would take home cards from a successful day with all 3 cards from the Rasbora Class heading back north.
22 families submitted auction ‘lots’. Our thanks go to Mr. Frank Tolombo (a friend of Ryedale A.S. from Whitby) who did a wonderful job preparing the auction, to Y.A.A.S. Chairman Mr. Steve Jones and his
auctioneering team of Mrs. Pauline Barker, Mr. Les Barker, Mr. George Grayson, Mr. Bede Kerrigan, Mr. Peter Riley, Mr. Geoff Bell and Mr. Martin Echarri who all had a very busy, but enjoyable, afternoon. Thanks are also
expressed to any other friends who helped with the auction ‘running’. Just for the record the many people who attended meant that there was not a seat or standing place left in the large auction hall. Now no Open Show
would be complete without a small army of helpers so our thanks go to the following: -Administration - Mr. Cliff Hildred and Mr. Steve Milner.Kitchen helpers - Miss Sue Marshall, Mrs. Gwen Frisby, Mrs. Sue Grayson,
Martin from Scarborough, Mr. Henry Hallsworth, Tracey and Mrs. Ann Grayson. Tea & Coffee - Mrs. Joan Douglas and Mrs. Marian Hildred. Raffle - Mr. Martin Echarri, Mr. George Grayson, Miss Sue Marshall and Mrs. Gwen
Frisby. Good helpers sorting the prizes were Master Liam Edwards and Paul from Castleford. Tombola - Mr. Mark Lyons, Mr. Ken Scott, Mr. Bede Kerrigan and Mrs. Gwen Frisby. All sorts of jobs - Mr. David Marshall. The
Ryedale members send their thanks to all the exhibitors who brought along their best fish, to the people who brought their auction ‘lots’, aquatic industry and tourist attractions for their generous support and to
all our friends, old and new, who made the journey to be with us.
