After problems with benching last year, The Charles Young Day Centre were gracious enough to let us in at 8.30 am. Most members
arrived before this time, but in contrast to the 30 minutes tardiness of last year, the Show Executive Manager (demoted by Bede) Secretary arrived with 17 seconds to spare. Benching & Booking-in ran smoothly
and our guests started arriving at 9.30am. As usual, Brian and Steve Chrich were one of the first to arrive, despite their long drive from Doncaster. Other long distance exhibitors were Steve & Trish Jones from
Scarborough, Kenny Hunter & John Hetherington from Workington and Dave Smart from Glenrothes, The benches quickly filled and we beat last year’s entry by 7, with 209. Another welcome visitor was David Marshall (YAAS,
A class Judge) who had kindly agreed to judge instead of Alan Race who was on holiday. David was not only faced with an unfamiliar rule and regulations but he was also pioneering a new FBAS judging system. In the new
system size is only pointed to a maximum of 10, a new category, presentation, using the other 10. The quality of fish exhibited was excellent with many rare and unusual fish on show. If a fish’s score was not in the
mid to high 80s, it would not have got a card. Best Fish in Show went to
Brian & Steve Chrich
with a magnificent
Hypostomus margaritifer.
Reserve Best in Shows were
Bede Kerrigan’s
Melanotaenia splendida australis, and Robbie &
Karen Kirkup’s
unusual Hyphesobrycon amapaensis. Championship class Db (Dwarf Cichlids) went to Robbie &
Karen Kirkup’s
Apsitogramma viejita. Best Breeders Team was an exhibit of the loaches,
Sewellia lineolata
, shown by Bede Kerrigan. Best pairs
went to Robbie & Karen Kirkup,
Gambusia heterochirs
. A special prize was donated by the
Charters Family
for Best Disqualified Fish - See Photo, this was won by
Bede Kerrigan
for his egglaying livebearer, Alfaro
cultratus.
The auction suffered a few hiccups but ended up being run professionally by the usual team of Norman Banks & Alec Morrison on microphone, Rose Jackson and Bob Henson on money & paperwork.
We were generously endowed with prizes this year thanks to our sponsors - listed below, and were able to give out worthwhile gifts along with the prize cards. The Members of STAMPS would like to thank all of those who
made the show a success.
