Continent:  Asia
Distribution:  Burma (Myanmar)
Habitat: small, shallow ponds with thick weed

Danio Kathit (Burma Fire-ring Danio)
Family:  Cyprinidaedanio_kyathit.jpg (12258 bytes)
Continent:  Asia
Distribution:  Myanmar (Burma)
Habitat: streams & rivers
Food:  small live foods & commercial flakes etc.
Water Temperature:   22-26°C
Water Chemistry:   pH 7
FBAS Size:  50mm
FBAS Class:  K
Additional Information: Imported size 30mm. At first look will look like the pink flush zebras (now banned under the genetic modified laws) a recent described species the ‘kyathits’ have been imported from Milking & Myanmar. And are being commercially bred in Asia, the fish photographed was imported under its common name! As ‘kyathit’ the spots/rings will give way to stripes, so I am sure this is a region variation of ‘Danio kyathit’. Watch out for spotted and striped kyathits being separated and sold under a new name! Breeding is as other danios, egg scatterers and, avid egg eaters. Information & image: Robbie Kirkup

Additional Information: Imported size 15mm. Ideal tank companion for the popular galaxy rasbora (Celestichthys margaritus) and for the popular nano-aquariums which are now big sellers! The fish are brave and have aggressive postures towards each other, they are not fin nippers. Both sexes have a stripe which begins at the middle of body and runs down to the anal fin tip. The female has a pink flush and its anal stripe is not as prominent as the male's. Three colour variations are imported, so here is the low down, the females are red and the males depending on the spectrum of light are neon green or blue.

Rasbora vulcanus (Red Reticulated Rasbora)
Family:  Cyprinidaerasbora_vucanus.jpg (10385 bytes)
Continent:  Asia
Distribution:  import from Sumatera Barat, Indonesia

Water Temperature:   22-28°C
Water Chemistry:   pH 7
FBAS Size:  40mm
FBAS Class:  J
Additional Information: Imported size 30mm. Treat as Rasbora reticulata, which originates only from Nias Island, the quiz photo was taken without flash, if flash were used, hiding the red flush, the fish would look like reticulata. I can see this species which was described in 1999, will replace reticulata, as it is easier to obtain so if you have reticulata set them down to breed! This is the Rasbora vulcanus from around the town of Painan, Sumatera Barat. The epithet vulcanus refers to the fiery red-orange the male exhibits when suitably conditioned. The female is larger with a deeper body, pale yellowish on the body with yellow-orange on the fins. Information & image: Robbie Kirkup
