Puntius gelius(Golden Barb)

Synonym:   Barbus gelius
Continent: Asia
Distribution: Bangladesh, India & Pakistan, Import from India
Habitat: streams & rivers
Food:  small live foods & commercial flakes etc.
Water Temperature: 18-28°C
Water Chemistry: pH 7
FBAS Size: none, 40mm for B. canius
FBAS Class: B
Additional Information: Very similar to Barbus canius, which I used to show very successfully in the early 90s, then a paper was published which said all our gelius barbs were canius, the hobbyist or judge will find it difficult to strip the flesh from the fish and study the dentistry! So all my ‘gelius’ photos are of this species, that said I do not think I have ever seen a canius barb to make ID easier. The canius barb is a narrower fish with clear white abdomen is interrupted by a solid dark stripe which runs’ down from the dorsal, the ‘gelius’ is more of a blotch, I will add more detail on this difference elsewhere on the site. Another small growing peaceful fish ideal for the smaller aquaria, breeds typical barb/goldfish fashion.
