Wild Australasia,  BBC Complete Series
Robbie Kirkup has donated the following DVDs to the club and has written this summary to explain the series to us.

A view into paradise, what it could be like without the population explosion of humans and the mistakes to the management of the environment.
Most hobbyists are aware that various fish introduced into Australia ‘cichlids, gouramies & livebearers’ to control mosquitoes, ended the cycle of native fishes living in those waters and in turn did a poorer job of controlling the mosquito population. Most recently koi carp were introduced to the pet trade, and as most Australians had swimming pools, they were not prepared to turn them over to Koi, after all the underwater beauty of the Great Barrier reef was close at hand, and marine fish keeping is most popular ‘down under’. This resulted in the koi being released into the environment, were they bred rapidly, and cause erosion to the river side banks and fauna, now they are regarded as pests (I have an angling video showing this) and are exterminated at every opportunity!
But much bigger mistakes were made a century ago, the ‘Dawn Chorus’ then was deafening with no mammals on the continent the forest floor was full of marsupials, birds bats & reptiles many would use the ground as there nest sites and provided easy meals for the first European settlers; that would end with the introduction of ‘cats’, ‘rats’, ‘rabbits’, ‘foxes’, ‘camels’, ‘pigs’ and even ‘honey bees’, resulting in the demise of 80% of the creatures in the immediate areas!
But all is not lost as New Guinea is still vastly untouched with the most beautiful birds on the planet living there as well as bizarre and distinctive strange creatures like tree kangaroos, the islands are ‘Arks’ one such being New Caledonia, an original Jurassic Park populated entirely by Reptiles and birds 80% are not found any were else on earth.
A superb visual treat for nature lovers, but not to many fish on show, 45 million years in the making. An epic journey of exploration from tropical rainforest jungles to the kayas ‘parrots’ playing in the snow on the mountainous peaks.
