History
of the Marsden Inn
The
present Marsden Inn was built in the late 1930’s to replace the old pub, which
stood on Lizard Lane, somewhere near the new caravan site entrance.
Materials used were carefully chosen, especially the roofing tiles which matched
the surrounding area of colliery and quarry workings. The nearby Fountain Inn,
also built at that time, still has its green tiled roof to blend in with the
surrounding green fields. Whether this tactic worked, which was to escape enemy
bombers, is happily obvious.
Over the years since, there have been many sightings of a uniformed ghost in the
kitchen. Indeed the building has a record of strange phenomena including a
sighting of a lady in the downstairs lounge, up to date with a UFO sighting over
the building in 1989.
The building was extensively renovated early in 1987, when the Old Green Room
and the Blue Room (the Mayor’s Parlour) were joined to form the lounge.
