STAMPS 5th Open Show Report

STAMPS held its 5th Annual Open show in May of this year.
The show has gone from strength-to-strength over the years, attracting more exhibits each time. This year there were 274 exhibits on the bench, not a lot compared to other shows and other times, but indicative of the growing popularity of the hobby in the area.
STAMPS Members travel to shows as far a field as Lancashire, Yorkshire and Scotland; this was reflected in the entry list with clubs travelling from afar a field as Glenrothes, Ferrybridge, Sheffield & Workington. Some judges also had a few hours of travel behind them; John Cowan from Dumfries in Scotland, and David Marshal from Pickering on Yorkshire.
As well as a big entry, there were also lots of big exhibits, the two goldfish classes in particular saw the tables groan under the weight of 45-60cm long tanks. Nick Swales of STAMPS got first & second in the twintail class with an excellent Ryukin & Pearlscale
There was an outstanding display of cichlid, the Rift Valley section having a good number of fully-grown, beautifully coloured exhibits (the first 4 qualified for the TTAA, Three-rivers championship class in October). In fact, the top six fish were only separated by 5 point, 5th & 6th both gaining 84 points. Dennis Taylor won with a cracking glowing yellow, Labidochromis caeruleus. Andy & Vera Flinn's Aulonocara stuartgranti & John Douthwaite's Lamprologus sp. daffodil trailing by one point each, leaving Dennis to pick up fourth  also with an Aulonocara jacobfriebergi.
The AOS Cichlid class was dominated, in both senses, by some very large specimens, all capable of winning, and even gaining best in show. D-jay's Silver Cichlid (Vieja argentae) won, only just piping Bede Kerrigan & Ronnie Flinn's Humbug Cichlids (Tilapia buttikoferi).
New and rare fish abounded. The FBAS Championship class F, for Killifish had two rarely seen exhibits; The Arabian Killifish (Aphanius dispar dispar) and The Persian Killifish (Aphanius mento), both a little undersize but well coloured. First & second in this class, both owned by Bede Kerigan, went to male & female Argentine Pearlfish (Austrolebias bellottii (Ezeiza)). The outright winner being the male, again, slightly under size but with a good body and colouring. The female fish had the best potential, once reaching full size it could be in the running for best in show.
The other FBAS Championship Class was R, Wild Platies. Only 4 fish were entered, two Xiphophorus xiphidium, and two Xiphophorus milleri. The honour went to Bede Kerrigan with an X. xiphidium, the 3 runners up prizes going to D-Jay.
Our friends from outside of the region picked up their fair share of prizes.
John Hetherington and Bernard O'Neil from Workington, D-jay & Denis Taylor from Ferrybridge & Dave Smart form Glenrothes all featured in the prize list.
A slightly reduced number of auction lots meant we were more than grateful to Wendy & Amy Charters for their magnificent effort with the raffle. Wendy was later presented with a bouquet from the club for her sterling work over the last year.
All-in-all, everyone seemed to go away happy, and looking forward to Derwentside's show in August.we would also like to thank our sponsors for this year:
